project
In this mapping project I have built an interface for a user to learn about the film
Memento. The film is quite complex as it has two different timelines running in opposite
directions: one in chronological order and the other in reverse chronological. The viewer learns
about each character in the reverse order; their fate shown in the beginning of the film and their
introduction at the end. My interface aims to break down the film by character and time to reveal
facts about the film.
Over the course of six weeks I had struggled with how to make the film content easily
understood. The problem was that the film has a timeline in black and white playing
chronologically while the color timeline is interspersed in reverse chronological order. It makes
the film, as a database, very difficult to organize for interface design. After searching through
many different interfaces I was inspired to create a website for a user to explore the content of
the film by being able to see both timelines of the film with the ability to filter out characters. In
this way, a user can see each of the characters in chronological order and how they would
naturally develop over time in a story.
