thesis abstract
Narrative journalism goes beyond mere reporting to tell stories and uncover purpose. It creatively presents in-depth news through the use of literary writing techniques and personal style while maintaining a goal of objectivity. In the digital space, Interactive Narrative Journalism is the combination of artful storytelling and dynamic reporting through the use of multiple media types — text, photos, videos, audio clips, animation, interactive elements and motion graphics. Interactive narratives have the potential to enrich a story, extend the user experience, and create custom relationships through the use of non-linearity, variability, personalization, participation and other elements unique new media.
As journalism and storytelling evolves in the digital space, these numerous media options and enhanced capabilities present opportunities as well as challenges to telling stories and creating experiences. My thesis investigates how the combination of personal narrative and the narrative created by the collection of data, experienced in a dynamic online environment, can enhance the overall experience for an audience and tell a more complete story.
