DMI Alumni and Student Teaching Summer Courses

DMI alumni Colin Owens (MFA, 2009) and current student David Tames (MFA, 2011) have generously offered their expertise as instructors in two courses this summer.

Colin Owens is teaching Sound Design for Dynamic Media, a course that examines the use of sound in communication design and dynamic media. Students are asked to create a common language between what they hear and what they see in order to use sound effectively in their work as designers and communicators. In the first assignment, “Everything is Music”, students first drew what they heard on a sheet of paper—in space and time. Next, they recorded sounds, created accompanying visual symbols and composed a time-based piece that demonstrated their audiovisual elements. For their final project, “Digital Harmony”, students are exploring what visuals sound like in a dynamic context. Shown above is Kent Millard's sound drawing for "Everything is Music".

In June, David Tames taught Documentary Video Boot Camp through MassArt Professional and Continuing Education for the second time. In five full days students were immersed in learning the fundamentals of video documentary in a hands-on, highly focused setting. Participants explored basic shooting techniques, composition, location sound recording, lighting, interviewing technique, project organization, and editing with Final Cut Express. Students completed a series of assignments using traditional, cinéma vérité, and subjective approaches to documentary and engaged in lively classroom screening and critique. Working in small groups, students produced short documentary films to wrap up the experience. The class will be taught again during the January, 2010 inter-session.
